Description

French Onion Beef and Noodles is a hearty dish that combines tender beef, caramelized onions, and egg noodles in a savory, cheesy sauce. Perfect for busy weeknights or comforting family dinners, this recipe is an irresistible fusion of French onion soup flavors with a pasta twist.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb beef stew meat or sirloin, cubed
  • 2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 3 cups beef broth
  • 8 oz dry egg noodles
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (optional, for thickening)

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Brown the beef cubes, seasoning with salt and pepper, then remove and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, melt butter and add sliced onions. Cook on low-medium heat, stirring often, until caramelized (about 20 minutes).
  • Add minced garlic and thyme, cooking for 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer. Add the browned beef back into the skillet. Cover and cook for 20-25 minutes until tender.
  • Meanwhile, cook the egg noodles according to package instructions. Drain and set aside.
  • Optional: Mix cornstarch with water and add to the skillet for a thicker sauce.
  • Stir in the cooked noodles and shredded cheese. Mix until the cheese melts and coats the dish evenly.
  • Serve hot, garnished with additional thyme or cheese if desired.

Notes

  • Substitute Gruyère with mozzarella or Parmesan for a different flavor.
  • For extra richness, add a splash of cream before mixing in the noodles.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container and reheated for up to 3 days.
